William Tilson is professor of architecture and director of the Caribbean Architecture Studio in the School of Architecture at the University of Florida. His research focuses on place making strategies that intersect electronic and location-bound design. In the Caribbean Studio, these issues are explored as a study of landscapes and public spaces transformed by global economic and cultural forces transmitted through electronic communications-a collaborative project with entities at UF and countries throughout the region.  An important component of this research is a yearly design workshop that examines rural landscapes that, over generations, have been constructed as places of ritual, work and conflict. Supported by a grant from the Organization of American States, Tilson offered the first ever workshop dedicated to constructing place making databases for the Internet using techniques developed by FRE and directed towards NGO professionals from the Caribbean. In conjunction with FRE and the government of Barbados, he developed a sustainable development plan and prototype community website for the historic seacoast community of Speightstown. Currently, he is collaborating working with architect Ron Kenley in Paris on the construction of an educational MOO space based on Walter BenjaminÕs ÒOne Way StreetÓ.
