Public Mood Ring at ISEA2006 ZeroOne San Jose: A Global Festival of Art on the Edge & the Thirteenth International Symposium of Electronic Art AUGUST 7-13, 2006. A 10' x 20' rectangular canopy with LED lights is integrated into C4F3 Interactive Cafe at San Jose Museum of Art designed by Milan-based design firm Syneo. Installation visitors use the CRT monitor on the counter below to participate in the online lighting selection process.

Public Mood Ring installation at the Urban Institute for Contemporary Art, Grand Rapids, MI, December 8, 2006 - January 19, 2007. Participants at the exhibition inhabit a lounge space lit by changing LED lights and select news stories from the online website for the determination of a color mood.

At the request and selection of a remote viewers logged onto the artwork site and to a computer station just outside the installation room, Public Mood Ring software searches for the mood of a current public issue represented by instant Internet news text. A series of animated web pages allow users to pick a news story and a cultural color model, and then displays the process and results of the search engine as the mood outcome.

At the Public Mood Ring website participants from anywhere in the world can choose from a variety of cultural models to decide on the mood color. Icons include color systems generated by Mood Ring reactions, Feng Shui color values, Doppler Radar color keys, Tibetan Buddhist symbolism, Zulu Beadwork and so on.

In the final screen on the Public Mood Ring website emotive words are sifted from the news text to see which of the fourteen moods of the mood ring is dominant within the article. The resulting color is then transferred to the LED lights at the installation site, viewed in the live webcam view in the lower right.
