Re: FRE Consultancy

<< Hi Will and all
Thanks for this info about the activity surrounding ground zero
planning. I am gathering this kind of stuff as "protection" against the
charge that the MEmorial project somehow exploits the tragedy or is
"opportunistic." On the contrary, our consultation is part of this much
larger democratic process of darning the sock of national identity (a
Lacanian allusion). A difference in our work, in the immediate case of
the soft Y, is that we produced a peripheral (the pom-Y) and a testimonial
(Will's mystory). We have not made any suggestions about a permanent
memorial. Our MEmorial is a supplement to the eventual winner of the
design competition. At the same time, our emerAgency treatment of the
internet as a living monument could be conceived of as a practice capable
of bringing school curriculum into monumentality. Perhaps we should make
some sort of proposal along these lines...

Re- FRE Consultancy

<<Thanks for this clarification. Peripheral, supplement, important words and concepts here. The Free Biennial was in some sense supplimental to the Whitney Biennial. The Street site likewise to ground zero. The pom poms as small, imperminant are a peripheral momument/artwork, The idea that submitting an official architectural proposal is somehow become reified as expertise. The idea of a living education/mystorical website seems better. I will search the possibilities out.>>
From Ulmer’s website text:
“The MEmorial consists of a "peripheral," a commemorative
device attached to a legitimate public memorial or monument, and that
calls attention to the disaster ongoing in the private sphere that is
equally worthy of collective recognition as a sacrifice.”
